/ *Global Risks Report 2017 World Economic Forum (text, charts and
video) <http://reports.weforum.org/global-risks-2017/>*
Now in its 12th edition, The Global Risks Report 2017 completes more
than a decade of highlighting the most significant long-term risks
worldwide, drawing on the perspectives of experts and global
decision-makers...
Global Risks report 2017 features perspectives from nearly 750
experts on the perceived impact and likelihood of 30 prevalent
global risks as well as 13 underlying trends that could amplify them
or alter the interconnections between them over a 10-year timeframe.

Risks

2016 saw a crystallization of political risks that have led to the
election of populist leaders, a loss of faith in institutions and
increased strain on international cooperation. We should not be
surprised by this: for the past decade, the Global Risks Report has
been drawing attention to persistent economic, social and political
factors that have been shaping our risks landscape....
This year's report will examine the five greatest priorities facing
the world in 2017, their interconnections and the actions necessary
to avoid their harshest fall-out..

<https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-climate-papers-featured-media-2016>
Every year, thousands of scientific journal papers are published by
researchers across the world, but only a tiny proportion make it
into the pages of the newspapers...
Using Altmetric, we’ve compiled a list of the 25 most talked-about
climate papers of 2016. You can see the Top 10 in our infographic
Altmetric scores academic papers based on how many times they’re
mentioned in online news articles and on social media platforms.

*Chronology of Military and Intelligence Concerns About Climate Change
<https://climateandsecurity.org/2017/01/12/chronology-of-the-u-s-military-and-intelligence-communitys-concern-about-climate-change/>*
The U.S. military has been concerned about climate change since
the George W. Bush Administration, at the latest, but military
institutions such as the Naval War College have been warning
policy-makers since 1990, during the first Bush Administration. The
intelligence community has also been in the game since the early
1990s, with the establishment of the MEDEA program – a structured
collaboration between climate scientists and U.S. intelligence
agencies – and has been releasing intelligence estimates on the
national security implications of climate change since 2008,...
To clarify the historical record on this subject, we are therefore
posting below an updated chronology of US Department of Defense
(DoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) products that explicitly
address the climate change threat. A broader look at other national
and international security documents addressing climate risks can be
found on the Climate Security Chronology and Resource Hub.

Five Key Climate Takeaways From The Rex Tillerson Confirmation
Hearing

Secretary of state nominee and former ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson
testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on January
11. Tillerson is already under fire for making the seemingly false
claim that Exxon has not lobbied against sanctions on Russia and
other nations that would affect Exxon’s business dealings, but here
are five other climate change-related takeaways that reporters
should keep in mind in their coverage of the hearing and Tillerson
nomination going forward.:
1. Tillerson distorted climate change science … again
2. Tillerson disputed the Pentagon’s determination that climate
change is a significant national security threat..
3. Tillerson refused to discuss the "ExxonKnew" scandal.
4. Tillerson declined to endorse the Paris climate agreement.
5. Tillerson did not address climate change, oil, or even Exxon
itself in his opening remarks.

More Evidence on Climate Change and Conflict Links: Context is Key

THE CENTER FOR CLIMATE & SECURITY
... the role climate change may play in driving armed conflict rests
on important social science research which seeks to explore how
conflicts start, are sustained, and eventually end....
... conflict is most likely to arise from drought conditions when
three circumstances are present: the communities in question are
predominantly dependent on agriculture for their economic
livelihoods; their ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to
environmental changes (e.g. the importance of the monsoon rains in
the Indian subcontinent); and they lack coping capacity,
particularly if that capacity is impaired by indifference or active
suppression from the central government....

How Donald Trump Kingmaker**Billionaires Robert and Rebekah Mercer Have
Poured Millions Into Climate Science Denial
<https://www.desmogblog.com/2017/01/12/trump-kingmaker-billionaires-robert-rebekah-mercer-pouring-millions-climate-science-denial>
A DeSmog analysis of Federal Electoral Commission returns shows
Robert Mercer, the reclusive hedge fund manager, has donated $30.1
million to politics since January 2015 (a further $2.3 million has
come from daughter Rebekah and wife Diana)....the Mercers have also
pumped at least $22 million into organizations that push climate
science denial while blocking moves to cut greenhouse gas emissions....
The Chicago-based Heartland Institute has received $4,988,000 from
the Mercers, cashing its first $1 million check in 2008....
Another organization shy about getting cash from the Mercer Family
Foundation is the George W. Bush Foundation, the organization set up
in 2006 to look after the official archive of the George W. Bush
presidency.
The George W. Bush Foundation publishes a lengthy list of its
financial supporters and the Mercers are not on it. But tax records
show the Mercers have given the Bush Foundation $4.1 million since
2010...
The biggest beneficiary of Mercer Family Foundation cash is the
Media Research Center (MRC), a group which claims credit for
convincing Americans that most of the media has a "liberal" bias.

*This Day in Climate History January 13, 2004
<http://m.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/post/buying-some-time-on-climate-change-with-methane-and-soot/2012/01/13/gIQAQoDrwP_blog.html>
- from D.R. Tucker*
January 13, 2012: Brad Plumer of the Washington Post notes:
"When it comes to climate change, fossil fuels nab most of the
headlines. But a new study suggests the world should also pay closer
attention to smaller steps to curb soot and methane. In fact, those
measures could make all the difference in whether the world makes or
misses its climate targets...Now, in terms of warming the planet,
carbon dioxide — the byproduct of burning coal, oil, and natural gas
— is still the most important man-made driver. But methane and black
carbon (soot) also play a large, if less-appreciated role. Soot
particles, for instance, absorb radiation from the sun and can
hasten the melting of snow and ice cover when they fall to the
ground. Some scientists think that soot is accelerating ice melt in
the Arctic. What’s more, because methane and soot cycle out of the
air fairly rapidly (soot can wash out in a matter of days), clamping
down on these pollutants would have an immediate impact."
