What Californians believe about *climate change*

The estimates also found that many Californians falsely believe climate
scientists are in broad disagreement over whether global warming is real.

"This is not about when your tulips will reach full bloom, rather
biodiversity loss and the impact it has on plant phenology can
impact an entire ecosystem," Wolf said. "Plants flower to reproduce
-- to create seeds to produce the next generation. A lot of plants
rely on insects or birds or some other pollinator to help with this
process. For such plants, changes in flowering time could be a
really big problem. If a plant flowers before its pollinators are
active, the plant species can't reproduce or may produce fewer
seeds. If there are insects, birds, humans, or other animals that
are dependent on those plant species, they could be influenced, as
well. Plants and the communities in which they grow are
interconnected and critically dependent on each other."
Researchers have revealed that declining plant diversity - from
habitat loss, human use, and other environmental pressures -- causes
plants to flower earlier, and that the effects of diversity loss on
the timing of flowering are similar in magnitude to the effects of
global warming. The finding could have a powerful influence on the
way scientists study ecosystem changes and measure the effects of
    global warming.
"Losing species from a system can shift the timing of biological
events as much as climate change can," said Amelia Wolf, a postdoc
in the Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology (E3B) department
at Columbia University and lead author on the study. "Climate change
has been shifting the timing of biological events such as flowering,
raising concerns about timing mismatches between co-dependent
species. This new paper is the first to demonstrate that, in
addition to the impact of global warming, we need to be concerned
about the ways that species losses are affecting the timing of
    biological events."

Release of Arctic Methane ''May Be Apocalyptic,'' Study Warns
The impending release of methane hydrate across the Arctic is not a
good sign for life on Earth.
Abstract...The cause for the end Permian mass extinction, the
greatest challenge life on Earth faced in its geologic history, is
still hotly debated by scientists. The most significant marker of
this event is the negative δ13C shift and rebound recorded in marine
carbonates with a duration ranging from 2000 to 19 000 years
depending on localities and sedimentation rates. Leading causes for
the event are Siberian trap volcanism and the emission of greenhouse
gases with consequent global warming. Measurements of gases vaulted
in calcite of end Permian brachiopods and whole rock document
significant differences in normal atmospheric equilibrium
concentration in gases between modern and end Permian seawaters

    Be afraid.
What does a climate change denier wish for when everything seems
possible? With Congress and the White House in agreement on the
unimportance of science, there's no need to settle for rolling back
President Barack Obama’s environmental agenda one regulation at a
time. It's time to get the Environmental Protection Agency out of
    climate change altogether...
To get a sense of what the wish list looks like, the annual
conference of the Heartland Institute would be a good place to
start. The right-wing think tank that has received funding from
ExxonMobil and Koch groups - and is best known for pushing out
misinformation on climate change—has sponsored this annual gathering
for the last 12 years. This year the theme was "Resetting Climate
Policy," reflecting the triumphant and hopeful mood of the
conference now that they control the agenda.

China is Blaming Global Warming for Higher Than Average Sea Levels

China's coastal regions have recorded an annual sea level increase
of 3.2 millimeters per year since 1980, a greater increase than the
    global average.
In its annual report published on Wednesday, the country's State
Oceanic Administration said that sea temperatures rose by an average
of 32.4 degrees Fahrenheit per decade between 1980 and 2016...
The administration also stated that the average sea level along
China's coast was 33 millimeters higher than it was in 2015, and 82
millimeters higher than the average level from 1993 to 2011,
    Shanghaiist reported...
The rise of sea levels has been attributed to climate change, which
could lead to coastal erosion and frequent typhoons...
"Against the background of global climate change, China's coastal
air and sea temperatures have soared, coastal air pressure has
fallen and sea levels have also soared," the administration said,
    according to Reuters.

Mahowald tapped to help frame UN report on*global warming*
    <http://news.cornell.edu/stories/2017/03/mahowald-tapped-help-frame-un-report-global-warming>

Cornell Chronicle -‎Mar 22, 2017‎

Natalie Mahowald, professor of earth and atmospheric sciences, has
been selected by the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change (IPCC) as a lead author on the "Special Report on
Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius."
"The goal of keeping temperatures from climate change below 1.5
degrees C at year 2100 is very ambitious, or potentially impossible
    – given the emissions that have already occurred and the existing
fossil-fuel fired power plants and facilities," said Mahowald.
"Although the IPCC synthesis is just starting, my personal reading
of the literature suggests that we are extremely unlikely to keep
the temperature rise below 1.5 – or even 2 – degrees C by efforts to
convert our energy systems to sustainable energy alone; much more
extreme measures are required. Here in this report we will explore
the costs and benefits, and the tradeoffs and synergies that are
implicit in trying to reach such an ambitious goal."

The Associated Press reports:

"Environmentalists say their requests for a meeting with Energy
Secretary Spencer Abraham in the months prior to the release of the
Bush administration's energy report were rebuffed by an aide who
    cited Abraham's' busy schedule.
"John Adams, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council,
said Wednesday the refusal to meet with the environmentalists stands
in sharp contrast to the eight meetings Abraham had with energy and
business groups in early 2001 to discuss the energy plan."
