[New youth leader, 20-yr old Clover Hogan - inspiration]
ARRIVING MARCH 2020
*Becoming a Force of Nature *
Why do we drink from paper straws in plastic cups? Is protest really
that effective? Will the climate crisis be our downfall, or redemption?

This podcast takes a deep dive into 21st century activism and the path
to saving the planet.

[talk with Clover Hogan]*
**Clover Hogan is a 20-year-old climate activist, researcher on
eco-anxiety, and the founder of Force of Nature. *

In this podcast, she talks with Caroline Hickman about how depth
psychology transformed her approach to her activism; from creating space
for despair and optimism, to understanding how narratives in society
define our ability to inspire change.
Clover's work has taken her from researching eco-anxiety in students,
and helping them find purpose at the junction of passion and pain - to
working with Wall Street bankers to become aware of their own denial and
defensive mechanisms.
Clover and Caroline reflect on how the military-industrial complex
continues to influence our approach to climate solutions; as well as
navigating anthropocentrism and the saviour complex within the
sustainability movement. They discuss what comes next for students who
have been banner-blazing in the street; what the world could look like
if we pursue transformation over tokenism; and why, to get there, our
perception of power must change as we deconstruct the stories we tell
ourselves about the world, and our role in it.

[climate anxiety]
*'Overwhelming and terrifying': the rise of climate anxiety*
Experts concerned young people's mental health particularly hit by
reality of the climate crisis
- -
*Advice for parents*
*Remember that you do not need to be a climate expert* It's OK to
explore learning together. If your child asks a question you can't
answer immediately, respond by saying: "What a great question. Let me
look into that so I can answer it properly."

*Try to validate, rather than minimise, children's emotions* If children
express anxiety, it's much better to say: "It's OK to feel worried. Here
is what we can do about it," than to say: "Don't worry. It's all fine."
But always try to support this emotion with suggestions for positive action.

*Negative information hits harder* Bad or threatening facts tend to
resonate more strongly - and therefore stick in the mind. So try to
balance one piece of negative news with three pieces of positive news.
Have some examples of good climate-related news ready - for example,
successful conservation projects.

*For younger children, keep it local and tangibl*e Suggest litter picks
and school events. For teenagers, encourage them to stay connected at a
wider level - help them write to their MP, take part in protests and
join local communities and campaigns.

*Set practical goals as a family and follow through* Record and
celebrate your climate successes together (even a piece of paper on the
fridge door). Reinforce the message that small actions can make a big
difference.

*Sex-Crazed Grasshopper (Locust) Swarms Amplified by Climate Change
Caused Extreme Desert Rainfall*
Feb 11, 2020
Paul Beckwith
Locust swarms threaten crops in Eastern Africa and Asia. Pakistan and
Somalia have declared national emergencies; Pakistan losing 40% of their
crops. Swarms involve billions of serotonin-crazed grasshoppers; double
their normal size, bright in colour, sex-crazed with huge reproduction,
able to eat their weight in plants every day, flying long distances or
gliding on winds. Climate change induced extreme weather events bring
torrential rains or cyclones to parched deserts in the Middle East;
rapid vegetation growth then leads to ideal conditions for initiating
locust swarms, which then wreak havoc far and wide.

*Climate Induced Frenzy: Grasshopper Metamorphosis from Loner to
Ravenous Super-Swarm Munchers*
Feb 11, 2020
Paul Beckwith
Solitary grasshoppers are passive, minding their own business. Bunch
them together in close quarters and it is a different story. Close
together their hind legs kick their neighbours many times per minute;
then watch out!! Serotonin courses through their little grasshopper
brains and they then have an "Incredible Hulk" metamorphosis. Apart from
becoming super horny, they double in size, become brightly coloured,
super aggressive, and fly long distances, eating their weight in a day.
Eating themselves out of house and home (like teenage humans) they swarm
to new areas to eat, rendering the landscape devoid of vegetation.

[Track the swarms]
*Desert Locust situation update - 10 February 2020*
Desert Locust spread to Uganda and Tanzania

Breeding continues in the Horn of Africa, which will cause locusts to
increase further in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya with new swarms forming
in March and April. Consequently, there is an unprecedented threat to
food security and livelihoods in the region.

In Kenya, numerous immature and mature swarms continue to move
throughout northern and central areas. Mature swarms reached within 50
km of the Uganda border on 6 February and other mature swarms nearly
reached the Tanzania border on the 7th. Widespread egg laying and
hatching have started, and so far numerous dense early instar hopper
bands are present in some central areas. Aerial and ground control
operations are continuing.

On 9 February, there were reports that Desert Locust arrived in
northeast Uganda near Amudat (0157N/3456E). Other reports indicated that
Desert Locust had crossed the border into northern Tanzania close to Mt.
Kilimanjaro, reaching Arusha and Mushi.

In Somalia, second to fourth instar hopper bands are present in the
northeast near Garowe. Other infestations are likely to be present in
the northwest, central and southern areas where breeding is expected to
be in progress.

In Ethiopia, maturing swarms were present in eastern and southern areas
and additional swarms moved into the Rift Valley from the south and the
north. Egg-laying and hatching are likely to be underway but so far it
has not been detected. Aerial and ground control operations continue in
most areas.

Widespread hatching and band formation will occur in the coming weeks in
Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. There remains a risk of a few small swarms
appearing in northeast Uganda, southeast South Sudan and perhaps
northern Tanzania in the coming days.

Elsewhere, above-normal breeding continues along both sides of the Red
Sea coast where hopper groups, bands, adult groups and a few swarms are
forming on the coastal plains. Swarms continue to appear in the
highlands and interior of Yemen. Control operations are in progress in
Sudan, Eritrea, Saudi Arabia and, to a limited extent, in Yemen.

In South-West Asia, a few residual summer-bred swarms appeared in
northwest Pakistan and there were reports in locusts in the interior of
Baluchistan near Kharan. Swarm breeding is on progress along parts of
the southern coast of Iran.

*On this day in the history of global warming - February 12, 1958 *

"The Unchained Goddess," part of the Bell Laboratory Science Series
produced by Frank Capra, is broadcast. "Goddess" directly addresses
human-caused climate change; the existence of the program would never be
acknowledged by climate-change deniers.
