/[ Train derailed in Texas windstorm -(not that rare) and mammatus
clouds (quite rare) ]/
*04-23-2024 Trent, TX - Train Derailed in Severe Thunderstorm Winds*
Live Storms Media
Mammatus clouds form when cold, sinking air pockets push the cloud base,
causing it to bulge and create distinctive pouch-like shapes. They often
appear during or after thunderstorms, and while they look menacing,
they’re mostly harmless. Scientists still don’t fully understand how
they form, but their formation may result from the interaction between
updrafts and downdrafts within a storm.

Just how strong must the wind blow to derail a train?
/ ChatGPT/
The wind speed required to derail a train depends on several
factors, including the train's size, weight, speed, and the
direction and consistency of the wind. Generally, strong winds
can potentially affect train operations and safety, but the
exact threshold for derailment varies depending on these factors.
In general, sustained winds of around 55-65 miles per hour
(88-105 kilometers per hour) are considered capable of causing
significant disruptions to train operations. Wind speeds in this
range can lead to problems such as blowing debris onto tracks,
causing objects to hit trains, or affecting the stability of
lightweight or empty railcars.
However, for a train to be derailed solely due to wind, much
higher wind speeds are typically necessary. It's challenging to
provide a specific threshold because it depends on various
factors such as the train's profile, its load distribution, the
condition of the tracks, and the presence of any protective
barriers or windbreaks along the route.
In extreme cases, such as tornadoes or severe thunderstorms with
exceptionally high winds, the risk of train derailment due to
wind increases significantly. Wind speeds exceeding 100 miles
per hour (160 kilometers per hour) can pose a serious threat to
train stability and infrastructure integrity, potentially
leading to derailments, especially if combined with other
factors such as debris or structural damage.

Welcome Prof. Eliot Jacobson live!
Since Monday was Earth Day, Eliot and Sandy have lots to talk about, and
of course, the chat will be an important part of Tuesday's show! We will
go from science, to emotions, and dive into what Earth Day was supposed
to mean, and what it does now, in 2024!

/[ Reuters calls Asia most vulnerable ]/
*Asia is most climate disaster-impacted region, UN meteorological agency
says*
By Reuters
April 22, 2024
GENEVA, April 23 (Reuters) - Asia was the world's most disaster-hit
region by climate related hazards last year, the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) said, with floods and storms causing the highest
number of casualties.
In a report published on Tuesday, WMO said that 79 disasters linked to
hydro-meteorological events had been reported in Asia in 2023. More than
80% of these were related to floods and storms that caused more than
2,000 deaths.
- -
Asia is warming faster than the global average, according to WMO. Last
year, high average temperatures were recorded from western Siberia to
central Asia, as well as from eastern China to Japan.
