*Elon Musk Announces Solar Roof
<https://climatecrocks.com/2016/10/29/elon-musk-announces-solar-roof/>*
About 500,000 solar panels were installed every day last year as a
record-shattering surge in green electricity saw renewables overtake
coal as the world’s largest source of installed power
capacity....Two wind turbines went up every hour in countries such
as China, according to International Energy Agency officials who
have sharply upgraded their forecasts of how fast renewable energy
sources will keep growing...."We are witnessing a transformation of
global power markets led by renewables,"

anthropocene climate change with Jason Box*
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD22dzzp_4Y>
(YouTube 32 mins) The changes in climate: one of the most debated
scientific topics in the history of humankind... there is a
widespread lack of knowledge of the current state of climate on
Earth. ... The temperature rise in the Arctic in the past two
decades has pushed Greenland ice to tell us some of its secrets.
... ice is extremely sensitive to changes in climate and seems to
be melting faster than any forecast....But what are the impacts of
the melting of the ice sheet, other than sea level rise? ...What
will happen in the future?.... there are many factors that have not
been taken into account in these forecasts and therefore that the
Greenland ice sheet will continue melting faster than any prediction
made until now.
The new season of Science & Cocktails begins with the recently
discovered tale of the life-story of the Greenland ice at

Scientist Goes It Alone on*Climate Change*to Save His State
<http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2016/10/saving-north-carolina-from-coastal-erosion-sea-level-rise-climate-change-btf/>
National Geographic -18 hours ago
Riggs and a team of scientists have predicted that North Carolina
could be threatened by a 39-to-55-inch*sea-level rise*by 2100—enough
to inundate not only the barrier islands that comprise the
tourist-beckoning Outer Banks, but thousands of miles
of*...Officially, North Carolina has chosen to look only 30 years
into the future, nine inches of sea-level rise by 2045 being a more
palatable scenario than a turn-of-the-next century catastrophe.
Scientists contend that such shortsightedness will result in more
efforts to hold back the sea that will be costly, ineffective, and
ultimately futile....“We can put dikes around all of this,” Riggs
says. “We can pump the water out forever. Are we going to do it for
Swan Quarter or for the whole peninsula? We have 10,000 miles of
estuary shore system. Are we going to dike and put bulkheads on that
whole thing? It’s not Manhattan Island. It’s the size of
Connecticut. We are looking at a pretty big hunk of property.”*

Commonwealth brainstorms on climate change reversal - Phys.org
<http://phys.org/news/2016-10-commonwealth-brainstorms-climate-reversal.html>
Phys.Org -16 hours ago
The Commonwealth is bringing together global experts to thrash out
new ideas for not just reducing climate change but actually
reversing its effects by mimicking success stories in
nature....While *the Commonwealth contains G20 industrial powers
like Britain, Canada and Australia and emerging forces like India
and Nigeria, many of its members are developing island
microstates*.....Examples were shared of concrete absorbing carbon,
ecologically destroyed landscapes flourishing again through getting
carbon back into the soil, and getting more productive agriculture
through mimicking the ecosystems of wild, untended land....There
were discussions on buildings designed like termite mounds that
ventilate themselves with cool air, or making ships' hulls like
shark skin....Also mooted were vertical axis wind turbines arranged
in school-of-fish formation so the ones behind gain momentum from
the vortices, creating far more wind power than regular wind
farms...."It's stunning, but this is not inventing anything new.
Life's been at it for 3.8 billion years," biomimicry expert Janine
Benyus told AFP...."We're talking about bringing carbon
home—rebalancing the problem of too much carbon in the air and not
enough in the soil," she added, stepping out of a workshop....With
its diverse membership covering a quarter of the world's countries,
action within the Commonwealth often paves the way for wider global
agreements.
*Climate change*panel talks fears, changes, options

Bonner County Daily Bee -14 hours ago
Fear was one of many concepts brought up at the*climate*panel
discussion hosted by*Climate*Action Coeur d'Alene, a group within
Kootenai, “Fear of reality can be a really good motivator short
term; it causes you to react quickly,” said Brian Henning*...The
night ended with the question, “what can we do individually and as a
community?”...Siitari said people first have to think about why they
are attached to a place....“We’re going to have to be flexible on
what our world looks like, on what Coeur d’Alene looks like,” she
said. “But that doesn’t mean we have to give up our
values.”...Matheson agreed people need to be more attached
“emotionally and practically to our land.”...Esler said people need
to understand that climate change and global warming is happening
now....“Once we accept that we are living with it on a day to day
basis, people are more likely to react,” he said....Hennig said
political involvement can help a lot....“When that legislation is in
front of you, vote for it,” he said. “Even if it’s not perfect, it’s
better than its absence.”*

From D.R. Tucker -*
October 30, 1988:*CANDIDATES LACK A GLOBAL VIEW NEITHER BUSH NOR DUKAKIS
SEEM AWARE THAT THE ENTIRE PLANET IS THREATENED**
*
*The Boston Globe* reports that despite NASA scientist James
Hansen's warning to the Senate earlier in the year about the urgent
need to combat carbon pollution, neither Republican presidential
candidate George H. W. Bush nor Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis
seems to have a comprehensive climate action plan: "It isn't
so much that one expects the presidential contenders to offer
ready-made solutions to the new generation of environmental problems
such as the greenhouse effect, but that they often seem not even to
comprehend the threat those problems pose to the globe...."The
problem that will dwarf all others, in the view of many concerned
scientists, is rapid climate change caused by the greenhouse effect.
If the current climate projections are correct, things will change
at a dizzying rate over the coming decades, threatening severe
disruptions, even chaos, for human societies and collapse for many
natural ecosystems. ... "Though the planet's failing health hasn't
been at the top of either candidate's list of concerns, the election
isn't as much a choice between Tweedledee and Tweedledum on
environmental matters as it might appear. Bush and Dukakis are
likely to respond differently to the global environmental crisis,
and, all things considered, Dukakis appears more likely to move in
the right direction... "Although he has sometimes put short-term
economic considerations ahead of long-term environmental concerns,
Dukakis clearly believes that environmental protection requires
strong and active government leadership. Nothing in his record,
however, inspires confidence that he will have the courage to
advocate the bold measures needed to begin moving the country and,
by example, the world to a different course. During the campaign,
Dukakis, like Bush, has opposed two measures that might be first
steps in a strategy to combat global warming: a stiff tax on
gasoline and a mandatory requirement that cars get at least 50 miles
to the gallon. ... "Bush, however, offers even less reason for
optimism, since he subscribes to the view that less government
activism in defense of the environment is desirable. As chairman of
the Task Force on Regulatory Relief, which aimed to free US industry
from the 'burden' of environmental regulation, he spearheaded the
Reagan administration's effort to relax or rescind regulations on a
variety of fronts, including air pollution, the phase-out of lead in
gasoline and toxic wastes. ..."Energy policy lies at the heart of
the greenhouse problem, since half of the greenhouse gases heating
the planet come from the burning of coal, oil and gas. Any solution
will require cutting these carbon dioxide releases by at least 50
percent or more, scientists say. Incredibly, neither candidate even
mentions the greenhouse problem in energy position papers. And to
the horror of those worried about climate change, both advocate
greater reliance on coal, which releases significantly more carbon
dioxide for the energy supplied than oil or natural gas. Switching
away from coal as quickly as possible would be a high priority in
any effort to slow climate change. ..."Nevertheless, Dukakis'
decisions in this area are likely to be more beneficial overall than
those of Bush, particularly because he is strongly disposed to
improving energy efficiency and fostering the development of
renewable energy sources, as his record in Massachusetts has
demonstrated. Improving energy efficiency is unquestionably the most
effective action that can be immediately taken to combat the
greenhouse problem, since the technology to save energy is already
on the market. ..."Bush comes from the dig-and-drill school of
energy policy, favoring production over conservation. In his years
as a Texas businessman, he founded an offshore oil-drilling company.
His goal, according to his position paper, is 'abundant energy
supplies at reasonable prices.' ... "With Bush's regulatory relief
task force leading the charge, the Reagan administration managed to
repeal such sensible measures as weatherization standards for new
buildings and to roll back fuel-efficiency standards for automobiles
from 27.5 miles per gallon to 26 mpg. These actions make little
environmental or economic sense, since they have increased our
dependence on imported oil, made our balance-of-payments problem
even worse, accelerated the depletion of US oil reserves and driven
oil exploration at home into sensitive offshore areas. ... "The
greenhouse problem will no doubt prompt a reexamination of nuclear
power -- a prospect that has heartened the severely crippled nuclear
industry. But questions remain about whether nuclear energy can be
economically competitive with other means of power production and
whether it can surmount the political obstacles stemming from
widespread safety concerns. Some in the nuclear-engineering field
believe that nuclear power will not make a major comeback unless the
industry develops a safe reactor. ... "Bush is an unabashed fan of
nuclear power, while Dukakis has taken an aggressive stance on
safety issues, such as evacuation plans in the event of an accident
at the Seabrook, N.H., nuclear plant. Though the nuclear industry
dislikes Dukakis, his skepticism might do more to foster a new and
more acceptable generation of nuclear reactors than Bush's largely
uncritical enthusiasm for the nuclear industry."
