*Stark warning on Atlantic cooling
<http://climatenewsnetwork.net/stark-warning-atlantic-ocean-cooling/>*

LONDON, 24 February, 2017 -- Climatologists say there is an almost
50% chance that the Labrador Sea in the North Atlantic Ocean will
cool rapidly within the next decade...
For thousands of years, parts of north-west Europe have enjoyed a
climate around 5°C warmer than many other regions on the same
latitude. But new scientific analysis suggests that that could
change much sooner and much faster than thought possible...
Climatologists who have looked again at the possibility of major
climate change in and around the Atlantic Ocean, a persistent puzzle
to researchers, now say there is an almost 50% chance that a key
area of the North Atlantic could cool suddenly and rapidly, within
the space of a decade, before the end of this century...
That is a much starker prospect than even the worst-case scientific
scenario proposed so far, which does not see the Atlantic ocean
current shutdown happening for several hundred years at least.

*Overlooked possibility of a collapsed Atlantic Meridional Overturning
Circulation in warming climate
<http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/3/1/e1601666>*
Abstract

Changes in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC)
are moderate in most climate model projections under increasing
greenhouse gas forcing. This intermodel consensus may be an artifact
of common model biases that favor a stable AMOC. Observationally
based freshwater budget analyses suggest that the AMOC is in an
unstable regime susceptible for large changes in response to
perturbations. By correcting the model biases, we show that the AMOC
collapses 300 years after the atmospheric CO2 concentration is
abruptly doubled from the 1990 level. Compared to an uncorrected
model, the AMOC collapse brings about large, markedly different
climate responses: a prominent cooling over the northern North
Atlantic and neighboring areas, sea ice increases over the
Greenland-Iceland-Norwegian seas and to the south of Greenland, and
a significant southward rain-belt migration over the tropical
Atlantic. Our results highlight the need to develop dynamical
metrics to constrain models and the importance of reducing model
    biases in long-term climate projection.

"Climate change" is popularly understood to mean greenhouse warming,
which, it is predicted, will cause flooding, severe windstorms, and
killer heat waves. But warming could lead, paradoxically, to drastic
cooling -- a catastrophe that could threaten the survival of
    civilization

The Atlantic Monthly magazine Looks Ahead to the 21st Century ONE
of the most shocking scientific realizations of all time has slowly
been dawning on us: the earth's climate does great flip-flops every
few thousand years, and with breathtaking speed. We could go back to
ice-age temperatures within a decade -- and judging from recent
discoveries, an abrupt cooling could be triggered by our current
global-warming trend. Europe's climate could become more like
Siberia's. Because such a cooling would occur too quickly for us to
make readjustments in agricultural productivity and supply, it would
be a potentially civilization-shattering affair, likely to cause an
unprecedented population crash. What paleoclimate and oceanography
researchers know of the mechanisms underlying such a climate flip
suggests that global warming could start one in several different ways.

With its 2016 National Environmental Scorecard, the League of
Conservation Voters has failed to see the climate vision behind Bernie
Sanders' historic presidential campaign. That vision is the only way
forward for the Democratic party.
Earlier today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) released its
vaunted National Environmental Scorecard for 2016, measuring the green
voting records of U.S. members of Congress. While there are no surprises
for fringe lawmakers like Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) and Sen. Ted Cruz
(R-TX), many were certainly befuddled to learn that Sen. Bernie Sanders
(I-VT) has received a score of 6%. To put that in perspective, 6% is
only two points higher than what Alabama's Republican Senators Jeff
Sessions and Richard Shelby were awarded in last year's edition.
This year, LCV wants to convince the public that Colorado's two senators
are stronger environmental allies than Bernie Sanders. Democrat Michael
Bennet, who voted twice in favor of the Keystone XL pipeline and is
known to have an affinity for fracking, received a 100% score. And
Republican Corey Gardner got a 29% rating, 11 points higher than his
lifetime average and 23 points higher than Sanders. The day that I
concede that Bennet and Gardner are better for the environment than
Bernie Sanders is the day that I concede that Jesus Christ was indeed a
white man with blonde hair and blue eyes.

A month into his presidency, Donald Trump already has a minus-8 job
approval rating (43% approve, 51% disapprove). Congress has a
minus-50 approval rating, and the Republican Party has a minus-14
favorability rating. All are facing widespread protests, marches,
and public resistance. Hundreds of concerned constituents have been
showing up to town hall events held by Republican Congressmen, like
this one with Tom McClintock (R-CA):

Despite the skepticism from the administration, most industry
leaders fully accept that*climate change*is real and is caused by humans
Thinking ahead is a competitive advantage — companies that adapt to
changing markets will survive and prosper. Of course, many of
America's top companies have global reach, producing and selling
around the world. A U.S. presidential administration that ignores
climate change will be a short-term blip..

Poet, writer, teacher and activist Kate Schapira visited the
University of Connecticut on Thursday afternoon to discuss*climate
change*in students' scholarly and human lives. When students first
arrived to the discussion, she asked them to write down...
When almost every person in the room shared that they were worried
about climate change, Schapira explained that this "me too" feeling
can facilitate comfort, collaboration and then change...
Schapira recognized that feelings aren't actions, and that writing
can be the bridge between feelings and actions...
"I liked that this is an activity that is not all science, science,
science," sixth-semester environmental studies major Sherly Santiago
said. "It's a lot more about human feelings toward the issue."..
In the question and answer portion after the event, one student
asked Schapira how she stays positive and avoids feeling helpless...
"It's absolutely true that the deck is stacked in favor of damage,"
Schapira said. "It is okay to feel tired. It is okay to pause. I
think that sometimes the best way to take care of yourself is to
take care of somebody else." *...
She then asked the students to switch papers with their peers. She
asked students to try writing a poem or story about a great change
their peer wants to read, as well as to try out a new method of
communication, whether that be dancing, painting, cooking or
hugging. Students were invited to send an email to their peer
    explaining how they did....*

The Science Museum of Virginia will host a five-part climate lecture
series during the month of March. The lecture series takes an
in-depth look at what climate.change is, how it's happening and its
    impacts on Central Virginia...
The series will feature scientists, researchers, geologists and
climate specialists. Each week, a different presenter will speak and
then interact with the audience for a meet and greet...
Their focus is to educate people on how they can individually combat
    climate change.
Dr. Jeremy Hoffman, Climate & Earth Science specialist for the
Science Museum of Virginia, recommends reducing your "energy
appetite "at home and at your business as a way to combat climate
    change...
"The key reason climate change is happening is the release of heat
trapping gases into the atmosphere due to burning of fossil fuels.
People need to learn how to be more energy efficient whether that
means to drive less or ride your bike more, figure out ways to make
your house more energy efficient during the winter time and during
the summer time and to find natural ways of cooling yourself down,"
    said Hoffman...
Hoffman describes how climate change is affecting regions in Virginia...

Decades later, Gille, who's lived in the area since 1974, once again
fears winter. But for a different reason:*climate change*. "I'd say
over the past couple years, I'd really noticed how much our winters
have changed," she says. "It's terrible*.*
During one of the recent 60 degree days, Gille and about a dozen
friends decided they needed to remind everyone about our collective
dire situation. The event was the brainchild of Minneapolis resident
    Polly Kellogg...
They made signs and went to Powderhorn Lake. "Now you've pissed off
grandma," read Gille's. "Climate change deniers skate on thin ice,"
another said. Some of the women donned swimsuits. Others disrobed.
    Some more so than others...
Gille was one of those who went topless for the cause...
"Here we are having the warmest February days ever locally at the
same time nationally we're moving in the opposite direction as to
the things we can do about global warming," she says. "We had the
[photo] shoot to let everyone know we're not okay with it and
    neither should they."

Last month City Pages brought you the story of a perfectly decent
drawing of a dick in the snow of Loring Park in Minneapolis. All in
    good cheer, we thought then...
Sure, it was a little chilly in early January, but no one worried.
This -- until we're absorbed by Canada -- is still Minnesota and
besides, this winter's been unusually mild. The rest of that month,
and in early February, the daily high temperature often rose above
freezing; and last weekend was so unseasonably warm, people stripped
down to their shirts and dined outdoors on patios...
What fools. For, by drawing the snow dick, we in the Twin Cities
apparently summoned the snow-dick-storm of the year...
The imminent arrival of a phallic-shaped snow event was predicted by
the National Weather Service radar (and noticed by a City Pages
tipster) on Wednesday. The weather system runs through parts of the
Dakotas and northern Wisconsin; the tip appears to be resting in
Lake Superior, which sounds like really cold. ..
    Minnesota is getting the shaft.
